Upcoming 'eSeries: Prepare to Survive' focuses on power and codes

Pinellas -- Learn about power outages and the building codes that help prevent disaster on the Wednesday, Nov. 2, eSeries: Prepare to Survive online from 7 to 7:30 p.m. on www.pinellascounty.org/eseries. Residents can log on and blog questions; the show can be viewed live on PCC-TV.

Hosted by Tom Iovino, the county’s emergency preparedness spokesperson, the 30-minute monthly interactive online event features two discussions on topics of hurricane preparedness and disaster readiness. In this storm-prone region, the information covered on this show is timely and relevant.

The live blog opens at www.pinellascounty.org/eseries before the presentation. Those interested in submitting a question for consideration can log in and enter their question into the blog window. Questions that meet the terms of participation will be posted. Since the show is only 30 minutes long, not all questions may be answered on air. Unanswered questions will be answered and posted online after the event.

2011 Property Tax Bills to be mailed Oct. 31

Pinellas County Tax Collector Diane Nelson reminds property owners that 2011 tax bills for real estate and tangible personal property will be mailed on Monday. The Tax Collector’s office will mail close to 415,000 tax notices, totaling $1.1 billion. Payments will be accepted starting Nov. 1, as allowed by Florida law.

“We are preparing for another busy tax season,” Nelson said. “We collect the majority of property taxes in November as a result of the 4 percent discount.”

Taxpayers receive a discount of 4 percent for payments made by Nov. 30. After November, payments made by the following dates – or postmarked if sent through the mail – receive the respective discounts: Dec. 31, 3 percent; Jan 31, 2 percent; and Feb. 29, 1 percent. All payments must be made by March 31 to avoid becoming delinquent.

AARP offers Safe Driver Class to honor veterans

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The AARP Driver Safety Program will honor current and former military personnel during the month of November with free driver safety classes tailored for them and their spouses.

The City of Clearwater Finance Department's Risk Management Division will host one such class Thursday, Nov. 10 at the Clearwater Main Library, 100 N. Osceola Ave. from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be an hour break for lunch.

Pre-registration is required along with a valid form of military identification such as a Military ID Card; discharge papers, (DD Form 214); American Legion Card, Military Dependent ID Card; or Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Card.

Clearwater, Florida - The Clearwater Chamber of Commerce is asking for your vote for the best 20 destinations in Pinellas County.

The chamber has a online survey that lets visitors and locals name their top choices for what the area has to offer. 

The survey includes best beach, museum, park and family outing. You can even add your personal favorite if not already listed on the questionnaire.

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Libraries across the state will participate in Florida Library Snapshot Day on Wednesday, Nov. 2. Clearwater libraries will be taking pictures on Nov. 2 and will forward them to the state library. They in turn will compile statistics to forward onto the State Legislature to show support for public libraries. This is a great way to celebrate all libraries and increase awareness about library services and resources.

Police: Lakeland man rams police cruisers

Lakeland, Florida -- A Lakeland man is in serious trouble after Clearwater Police say he rammed a stolen car into police cruisers.

According to police, on Wednesday night 26-year-old Justin Dale Nance was caught driving a stolen 2007 Hyundai while officers were randomly running computer checks around midnight on vehicle tags driving in the area. Police stopped Nance while he was at a red light at Drew Street and McMullen Booth Road.

The kick-off event for Country Club Townhomes will be held on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 10 a.m. when City and County officials will ceremonially raise the first wall at the site. This unique community is a joint effort of the City of Clearwater, Pinellas County, the Housing Finance Authority of Pinellas County, Neighborhood Lending Partners and private developer Southport Financial.

Located on the south side of Drew Street at 113 N. Betty Lane, Country Club Townhomes is focused on providing first-time home ownership that is truly affordable.
