Clearwater, Florida - A city marine facility operator is being credited with saving the life of a man at the downtown boat slips.

For his efforts, Thomas "TJ" Murphy was named Employee of the Month by the city of Clearwater.

iCORPS gives students inside access to county jail

Pinellas County Sheriff's Detention and Corrections Bureau hosted a class of 30 students for a tour of the Pinellas County Jail today, July 18, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, as a part of the iCORPS initiative.

iCORPS (Inner City Operation to Recruit for Public Safety) is a summer program developed in St. Petersburg for at-risk youth which introduces them to careers in law enforcment, corrections, fire rescue, and the Coast Guard, along with a better understanding of the public safety and criminal justice systems.

The iCORPS concept was developed after the fatal shootings of three St. Petersburg Police Officers earlier this year. The schools involved in the program include:

Threshers get ready to Pitch for Pink

Clearwater, Florida -- On Friday July 22,  the Clearwater Threshers will present the 6th annual Pitch For Pink game at Bright House Field. The Threshers players will wear special pink jerseys which will be available at auction to commemorate the game. Afterward, winning bidders will be invited on to the field to receive their jersey from the respective player.

The first 1,000 ladies in attendance will receive a special Pitch for Pink gift. The team will also honor breast cancer survivors in attendance with a special pregame ceremony and walk around the playing field.

Over the years the Threshers and partners have helped raise over $130,000 toward the fight against breast cancer.

Florida man killed in wreck on Interstate 95 in SC

MANNING, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a Clearwater, Fla., man is dead after his wife lost control of their minivan on Interstate 95 in South Carolina.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol says Mary and Bobby Lee West were driving through Clarendon County at around 2:15 p.m. Saturday when Mary West lost control of the couple's Dodge Caravan.

Deputies say she went off the left side of the road then came back on the highway before flipping several times.

Coroner Hayes Samuels Jr. says 61-year-old Bobby Lee West was pronounced dead at the scene. Mary West was airlifted to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities are still investigating.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Clothes To Kids (CTK) has an immediate need for school clothes and shoes as it is stocking up for Back To School.  Gently used school clothes especially boys and men's pants and jeans, uniforms, and shoes are in great demand.  Clothes To Kids (CTK) provides free clothing to Pinellas School children grades K thru 12 that are on the free or reduced lunch program.

Intersection of Cleveland St and Missouri Ave to Close

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The city's contractor for the current streetscape project is proposing to close the intersection of Cleveland Street and Missouri Avenue beginning Monday, July 25.

MTM Contractors, Inc. anticipates reopening the intersection on Wednesday, Aug. 10.

The purpose of this closure is to accommodate the following construction activities:

Pinellas County, Florida -- The National Association of Counties has honored Pinellas County with two 2011 NACo Achievement Awards for the Transportation eTownHall: On-Line and On-Call event, and the Financial Assistance Program 3-Track System.

The Achievement Awards are in recognition of effective and innovative programs which contribute to and enhance county government in the United States. This year’s awards will be presented at the 15th Annual Awards Ceremony on July 17, 2011 during the 2011 NACo Annual Conference and Exposition in Multnomah County, Oregon.
