'Prepare to Survive' with Pinellas County’s eSeries

With the start of a new hurricane season comes a new educational initiative from Pinellas County. The 15-minute eSeries: Prepare to Survive allows residents the opportunity to go in-depth on a particular hurricane preparedness topic such as forecasting, building codes, yard preparation, etc.

Join host Tom Iovino as he interviews Lynne McChristian of the Insurance Information Institute to discuss different types of insurance available, how homeowners can lower their premiums and how the claims process works. The eSeries format allows residents to ask questions through the online blog feature.

Pinellas Tax Certificate Sale on June 1

Pinellas County Tax Collector Diane Nelson announces the tax certificate sale for 2010 delinquent real estate taxes will be held June 1 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at bidpinellas.com. Last year’s sale drew more than 75,000 bidders, and the Tax Collector’s office is anticipating a significant increase in the number of participants this year.

The annual tax certificate sale is an online auction that allows bidders the right to purchase a delinquent taxpayer’s debt in exchange for an annual interest rate, ensuring the majority of unpaid property taxes are collected and distributed to various taxing authorities. The sale last year produced $60 million, which accounted for 96 percent of 2009 delinquent property taxes.

New Clearwater development is 'Florida-Friendly'

New Clearwater development is 'Florida-Friendly'

A groundbreaking ceremony at a Clearwater condominium complex on May 16 marked a new development, but not the usual type. The project will transform a 30-year-old landscape into a Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ project.

Over the last 18 months, Pinellas County Extension helped design the project for the Eagles Landing I and II Condominium Associations. Board members recognized the opportunity to turn the aging landscape into a sustainable, low-maintenance and water-conserving landscape. The attractive new landscaping is expected to save money on water and maintenance costs and to increase the homeowners’ property values.
