Prom dresses now available for girls in need

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Public Library has free gently used prom dresses available for Pinellas County high school students in need of a dress for their upcoming prom. Girls are invited to call and make an appointment to come by the Clearwater Main Library to pick out a dress and take one home at no cost, while supplies last.

•Girls must make an appointment with the Youth Services department at the Main Library in advance by calling the library at (727) 562-4970.

•Appointments will begin on April 1, 2011 and will be scheduled until supplies run out.

•Students need to bring their school ID card.

Dresses were donated to the Clearwater Public Library System by local community members. The Clearwater Main Library is located at 100 N. Osceola Ave. For more information, call (727) 562-4970.

Traffic delays possible during IronGirl Race

Clearwater, Florida -- Residents and people traveling in the area may experience some traffic delays during the 2011 IronGirl Event on Sunday, April 10, from 6 a.m. - 11 a.m.

Please allow for extra time when traveling the Sand Key Area, Clearwater Beach, Memorial Causeway, and downtown Clearwater. Due to the run route, there may be temporary closures on Coronado, between S Gulfview and the Roundabout.

Weather Alert: Tornado Warning for Pinellas

Pinellas County, Florida -- A Tornado Warning has been issued for central Pinellas County until 11:30 a.m.

At 10:24, National Weather Service doppler radar indicated a tornado 26 miles west of Indian Rocks Beach, or 30 miles west of Seminole, moving east at 35 mph.

The tornado will be near Indian Rocks Beach, Seminole, Clearwater and Pinellas Park.

A Tornado Warning has expired for central Sumter County, Hernando County and Southeastern Citrus County.

Pinellas County statewide health ranking: #20

Pinellas County, Florida -- Today,The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and University of Wisconsin released the 2011 County Health Ranking report. The first report that ranks counties nationwide on health outcomes and health behaviors was published last year. This year’s report is available for viewing on www.countyhealthrankings.org.

Pinellas County was ranked #28 of the 67 counties in Florida for "health outcomes" this year, ranked by mortality and morbidity figures.

The county was higher on the list of "health factors," being named #20 on the list that considers health behavior, clinical care resources, social factors, and physical environment.

Teens poets to compete during National Poetry Month

Teens poets to compete during National Poetry Month

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Clearwater Public Library System is hosting a teen poetry contest to coincide with National Poetry Month which is celebrated in April. The contest begins April 1 and ends April 30.

Each student can submit one poem on any subject and in any poetic form. Entries will be judged in two categories, 6 through 8 grades and 9 through 12 grades. The winner will receive a $75 gift card and the runner up will receive a $50 gift card. Winners will be notified by May 22.
