Downtown cleanup this weekend

Clearwater, FL -- Residents who want to keep downtown beautiful can pitch in this weekend as the city takes part in the Great American Cleanup. 

Volunteers are asked to report to the Station Square Park, 612 Cleveland Street, wearing comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes. Trash bags, gloves and litter grabbers will be provided - along with refreshments.

The cleanup effort will center on the Cleveland Street District bounded by Osceola Avenue, Court Street, Myrtle Avenue and Drew Street, and should end around noon.

Death investigation in Clearwater

Clearwater, Florida -- Police are investigating the death of a woman at 2463 Druid Road.

The victim was identified as Brenda Simonson, 40, of 2463 Gulf to Bay Boulevard, Lot 273.

Police said they were called to the Druid residence shortly before 5 p.m. to investigate a report of a shooting.  Further details of the incident have not been released.

An autopsy was planned for Wednesday morning.

Poetry contest for teens

Clearwater, FL-- The Clearwater Library System is marking National Poetry Month with a poetry contest for teens for April.


Students in grades 6 through 12 can submit a poem on any subject and in any poetic form now through the end of the month, and compete for a $75 gift card for first place, and a $50 gift card for the runner up.

Meeting to discuss proposed trail

Town 'n Country, FL -- The Florida Department of Transportation is holding a meeting March 29, to discuss a proposed multi-use trail along the Courtney Campbell.

The trail would be 8 miles long and run from Bayshore Boulevard on the Pinellas side to Ben T. Davis Beach in Tampa.

Many joggers, runners and walkers are in favor of the trail which would fill the void left when the "Friendship Trail "across the old Gandy Bridge, was closed due to safety concerns.

Clearwater, FL -- The city's Public Utilities department wants residents to observe Water Conservation Month.

During April, residents are encouraged to use less water by following what the department calls simple strategies:

- Fix drippy faucets. A 1 drip-per-second leak can waste as much as seven gallons of water in one day, so take time this month to fix your leaky faucets.
