Over 800 students to compete in track and field meet

Clearwater, FL -- The Kiwanis Club of Springtime City in Clearwater is honored to host the 49th Annual Ed Wells, Jr. / Kiwanis Invitational Track and Field Meet at Clearwater High School on March 22. 

Forty-two teams and over 800 boy and girl athletes in Pinellas county's public and private schools will participate. 

Over 400 medals will be awarded to the top eight places in each of the final running and field events. 

Four team trophies will be presented to the first and second place boy and girl teams along with two individual trophies to the top scoring boy and girl athletes.

26-year-old man killed in accident; one in serious condition

St. Petersburg, FL -- A 26-year-old man was killed Saturday morning after crashing into a concrete barrier during an accident on CR-321.

Around 11:21 a.m., Lindsey Brandon Elliot Hudson, of St. Pete, was driving southbound in the left turn lane of CR-321 (Duhme Road), approaching 54th Avenue North, when he failed yield the right-of-way and turned left into the path of Jacquelyn A. Simmons vehicle that was heading north on CR-321, according to the police report.

Bay area judges unite to inspire students

Clearwater, Florida - Several Bay area judges gathered at Mount Olive AM.E. Church in Clearwater to talk to students about the judicial process in an event called the Alpha Institute Judicial Forum.

Randy Lightfoot, one of the program directors for the Youth Development Initiative, says, "We're trying to get them to see that there's another side of the law. That what you see on television is just a small microcosm of what the total law picture is all about."

Karalia Baldwin is also a program director for the organization and says, "They wanted for them to be able to see a judge before they'd gotten into trouble and to look at it as a positive role model to look and see what it is they need to do to be productive citizens."

Pasco Circuit Court Judge Michael Andrews organized the first forum 10 years ago and told the crowd, "I believe that everyone in this room is capable of whatever it is they wish to achieve in life."

Clearwater firefighters 'step up' for Lung Association

Clearwater, FL -- Eight city firefighters will take part in the American Lung Associations 2011 Fight for Air Climb on March 26 at the Bank of America building in Tampa.

The team will climb 42 floors - 941 steps - dressed in full bunker gear and air packs, adding 65 pounds to their weight.

Talking part are Team Captain Firefighter Anthony Gomillion, along with Driver/Operator Mike Brown, Fire Medic Michael Hutto, Fire Medic Bradley Keating, Fire Medic David Marlow, Firefighter Christian Miller, Driver/Operator James Van Zandt and Fire Medic Mark Wing

In advance of the climb, the team will hold a pep rally and fundraiser this Saturday, March 26 at the original Hooters Restaurant, 2800 Gulf to Bay Boulevard, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

55-year-old Sue Rott will represent Land O' Lakes in the Bright Stars Senior Idol Talent show being held on April 6 at Ruth Eckerd Hall in Clearwater.

Clearwater, Florida - Taxpayers over the age of 60 can get free tax preparation help at the Aging Well Center now through April 14th.

The assistance from an AARP Tax Aide is also available to younger residents who are low or middle income taxpayers.

The help will be available on a first-come, first-served basis from 1 to 5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays.

Clearwater Library hosts youth Lego club

Calling all "Lego-maniacs"!   The Clearwater East Library is hosting a Lego Club meeting today from 2 - 4 p.m. The event will be held in Meeting Room A. 

If you are interested in attending, you can use their Legos or even bring your own!
Once there, Lego-lovers will be able to share their passion as they build some unbelievable creations.
