Governor Scott OK's funding for Aquarium film project

Clearwater, Florida -- Governor Scott has OK'd $5 million in state funding for the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

The aquarium will use the money to fund a sequel to the popular family-oriented movie Dolphin Tale, featuring Winter, the tailless dolphin.

TaxWatch had included the funding in its list of turkeys for the past legislative session, because the requests came in after legislators had a chance to review them.

The state budget will give the aquarium $1-million from the Department of State, and another $4-million from the Department of Economic Opportunity.

Volunteers Needed for Planting Project at Lake Chautauqua Park

Clearwater, Florida  -- The City of Clearwater Parks and Recreation Department is looking for 25 to 30 volunteers, ages 16 and up, to help with a large-scale planting project at the Lake Chautauqua Equestrian Park. The project will be held Saturday, June 1 beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Participants must wear close-toed shoes, and bring a pair of work or gardening gloves if you have them. Supervision, tools and supplies will be provided. Students who participate are eligible to receive school service hours.

He is scheduled to attend the Florida Council of 100 meeting Thursday evening at theSanpearl Resort.

The nonprofit organization was formed in 1961 at the request of then-Governor Farris Bryant to provide advice to him on key Florida issues from a business perspective.

Clearwater, Florida -- The City of Clearwater invites residents to attend Public Works Day on Wednesday, May 22 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Public Works Complex, 1650 N. Arcturas Ave. in Clearwater. This free, family-friendly event features water reclamation facility tours, demonstrations, and vehicle and equipment displays to show the importance of public works in community life. A new addition to this year's event is the North Pinellas Top Ops Competition in which utility and field crews from Pinellas County compete for top honors among local industry professionals.

Pinellas County, Florida -- The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office hosted their annual awards ceremony on Thursday, May 16, 2013. The awards ceremony recognizes courageous service, as well as, personal initiative in solving crimes and providing public service.

The Law Enforcement Deputy of the Year was awarded to Deputy Jim Piper and Detective Holly Tsanakaliotis. These two deputies acted courageously to save a four-year-old boy's life by administering CPR.

Moffitt cancer fundraiser at Pier 60

Clearwater Beach, Florida - Swimmers will help raise money for cancer research at Clearwater Beach Saturday.

Swim Across America hopes to outdo last year's effort and raise more than $120,000 for the Moffitt Cancer Center.

Hundreds of swimmers from around the state are expected to take part in the event which begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Pier 60.

The Swim will include a 1/2 mile, 1 mile and 2.4 mile options.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Big Brothers Big Sisters of Pinellas is having an upcoming event that needs 100 volunteers.

100 men volunteers to be exact.

Currently there are 131 boys who are waiting to be matched with a a male mentor in the program. Starting June 1 through September 8, the agency plants to recruit 100 male volunteers and match them with one of the boys who still need mentors.
