Pinellas Trail cleanup scheduled on MLK Day | Community Spirit
Pinellas County, Florida -- Individuals and groups can pledge a New Year’s resolution to help keep the Pinellas Trail neat and tidy by participating in the new trail Adopt-A-Mile program.
The Pinellas Trail Adopt-A-Mile kickoff takes place during the big Pinellas Trail Trash Bash cleanup Monday, Jan. 21, on the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The event is sponsored by Pinellas County Parks and Conservation Resources, the city of St. Petersburg and Keep Pinellas Beautiful. The clean up starts at 8:30 a.m. to allow participants to attend the big Martin Luther King Jr. parade in St. Petersburg at 11 a.m.
About a dozen sections of the trail will be designated as work areas, including downtown Clearwater, the first five miles of trail in St. Petersburg and a section near Stevenson’s Creek. Participants, both walkers and cyclists, can register on the Keep Pinellas Beautiful website www.keeppinellasbeautiful.org or they can call Keep Pinellas Beautiful at (727) 210-2759.
The deadline for registration is Friday, Jan. 18. Volunteers must register in groups of two for any preferred site. Volunteer assignments will be confirmed by phone prior to the Jan. 21 event. Participants will each receive a Trash Bash T-shirt at the end of the clean up.
The Adopt-a-Mile program for the Pinellas Trail is patterned after Keep Pinellas Beautiful’s Adopt-A-Mile program for county roads. On the Pinellas Trail, businesses or groups of two or more individuals agree to perform clean ups every other month for two years. These clean up activities are expected to greatly enhance the appearance of the trail and will go a long way toward keeping trailside debris from entering our waterways and polluting the natural habitats of our native wildlife.
The 47-mile Pinellas Trail is a linear park and recreation trail currently extending from St. Petersburg to Tarpon Springs. The trail, created along an abandoned railroad corridor, provides a unique, protected greenspace for walking, jogging, skating and biking.
