Pinellas buys state's first Farm To School citrus of 2012-13 season | Health
Safety Harbor, Florida -- Pinellas County Schools announces they have cleaned out this season’s first tangelo harvest of Arcadia’s Joshua Citrus Inc. farm as part of the Department of Agriculture’s Farm to School initiative.
District leaders will greet the first school delivery of this season’s Florida citrus on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at Safety Harbor Middle School.
The school district says the sweet, juicy fruit will make its way into school breakfasts and lunches as side items, garnishes, salad toppings and smoothie ingredients. Approximately 60,000 tangelos will be delivered to all school cafeterias throughout this week.
Since the beginning of this school year, Pinellas has purchased Florida okra, cauliflower, green beans and other produce through the Farm to School program.
