Roaches & Roast Beef at Arby's next to Clearwater High | News
CLEARWATER, Florida - Every day as school lets out the dining room inside Arby's on Gulf to Bay fills up with students from Clearwater High.
The fast food restaurant known for their sliced roast beef sandwiches is also popular with locals like Keith Crowell.
"The product is fresh, they have good service and pretty much the food is great," said Crowell after eating with his family Wednesday for lunch.
But late last month an inspector found more than just fresh food in the kitchen. The state documenting 10 violations, 4 considered critical including more than a dozen roaches running throughout the kitchen, 11 behind the ice machine and soda area, one on the ceiling and another on a thermometer by the back oven.
"Now I don't know if I want to eat here anymore, to be honest with you," said Crowell and learning the news. "Roaches are disgusting and they carry many, many diseases and I don't think I be coming back here after hearing that."
We wanted to know if the problems had been corrected, stopping in Wednesday before lunch and before school let out across the street.
The manager informed us she was unable to provide information on camera, but Arby's Corporate sent us this statement:
The score we received from the Health Department was unacceptable and we took immediate and aggressive action to address it. Upon re-inspection by the Health Department we received a score of 100%. Arby's top priority is to maintain the highest standards of food safety and cleanliness.
Before we left, we checked to see if Arby's had a copy of their latest health inspection report for the public to view.
"I can't give you a copy of anything," said the manager. Not providing a copy is a violation of state law.
Arby's also refused to allow our camera access into the kitchen to see if the insect issue was really under control.
That was not food news for customers.
"I will not go there ever again," said Clearwater High junior Markus Jalaber. For now, [I'll stay away] until I find out something is better."
