Red Bull killer's move to halfway house scares brother | News

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida -- The brother of Stephen Coffeen, the so-called Red Bull murderer, says he is frightened because his brother is being moved from a mental hospital in Chattahoochee to a halfway house in Tarpon Springs.

Stephen Coffeen admitted murdering his father, Robert, in December of 2009, but blamed it on lack of sleep and the fact he drank several Red Bull energy drinks.

Tom Coffeen doesn't buy his brother's story, and says his brother was able to fool the court when it bought his temporary insanity plea. Tom says his brother was jealous and planned the murder to get part of his father's estate.

The new facility will allow Stephen Coffeen to leave unaccompanied, and Tom Coffeen says he is concerned that he and his family -- which live less than an hour away from the facility -- will be targets. He is worried that Stephen Coffeen will harm them.

After six months in the halfway house, Stephen Coffeen can ask the court to release him.
