Aquarium dedicates expanded marine hospital

Clearwater, Florida - The Clearwater Marine Aquarium will dedicate an expanded marine hospital at its Island Estate.

The R.O. Jacobsen Center for Education and Animal Care increases the capacity of the hospital by adding a 250,000 gallon pool for marine mammals, and more room to house and rehabilitate North American river otters.

Clearwater, Florida -- The Clearwater Marine Aquarium will continue to host its free educational speaker series on Thursday, May 16 with Making Waves: An Evening with Experts. 

The presenter will be Dr. Steve Murawski, a research professor at the University of Southern Florida. Dr. Murawski has also held the distinguished positions of Chief Scientist for the U.s. National Marine Fisheries Service.

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Saint Petersburg College is the first community college in the state to launch a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC). 

On Wednesday, May 8, launched its free online course, Get Ready for College- Math, the first in a series of self-paced courses aimed at helping incoming students prepare for college. 

The goal of this class is to give potential sudents the help they need to improve their skills in math so that they can do well on the placememnt test or boost their confidence about returning to college.

Pinellas County, Florida -- Each year, thousands of children become ill from diseases that could have been prevented by basic childhood immunizations. Many more miss time from day care and school because they are under-immunized or inappropriately immunized.

Vaccines protecting children from diseases such as measles, whooping cough and polio are administered on a regular schedule as part of a child's course of care. Pediatricians, health providers and county health departments can provide vaccines at no cost to parents as part of the Vaccines for Children program.

On this evening Dr. Holli Byerly of Dolphin Plus & Dolphin Cove will discuss the cutting edge research in the marine mammalogy field. 

Welcome and refreshments begin at 6:00 p.m. while the actual lecture takes place at 6:30 p.m. 

This event will take place at Bright House Theater at 249 Windward Passage, Clearwater.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Park Services department has announced the launch of their new, free mobile application, which will serve as an interactive guide for users on the go at any of Florida's 171 parks, trails and historic sites.
